Work exploring one of the most politically and socially complex cities on earth, a place I associate with identity, family and warmth, and view through rose coloured spectacles. As a child of immigrants who were themselves children of migrants, Hong Kong was a staging point of my youth, a defining part of my family history, and a city that I both love and will never understand. The idea of ‘Hong Kong-ness’ is both at once highly specific, and yet intangible, held in journeys on the star ferry crossing the harbour, the whir of air conditions bolted to homes overhead, the crush of people, goods, food and rubbish, generating constant sights, smells and sounds.
