‘Conversations outside my head’ is a solo presentation of new works on paper.

A common houseplant sits on a stool in a room in a very small flat.  Kitchen, office, lounge, there are days when it is ‘other’ living being within touch, sight and voice.  An uncomplaining real world companion during online interactions, both constant and ever changing. In many ways, it is an ideal relationship – low maintenance, minimal judgement, patient. It is also a compromise – neither a person, nor mountains and rivers and forests.

This show presents work that explores daily practice, repetition and labour as coping mechanisms for anxiety, and seeks balm against further isolation through participation with a community. Visitors are invited respond to the work not just through looking and speaking, but action. For these few days, I relinquish control of my labour and worry, place faith in strangers and friends to add their own voices to conversations.

My practice comprises of printmaking, teaching and site specific participatory installation, often as the culmination of a residency. I use print as a method of enquiry, and participation as a request for dialogue, debate and rigour. In previous residencies in the Netherlands and the United States, visitors, studio members and fellow artists were invited to adopt work in exchange for activations. I consider the gallery as an extension of studio practice, a site where private thoughts are given public voice and visitors have agency, their creative energies often inspiring the next stage of work.
